Cayes

The Caribbean coast of Belize is all lined with a coral reef and some 450 islets and islands known locally as Cayes, with their total territory of about 690 square kilometers (270 sq mi). The word Caye means the island and is derived from Spanish "cayo". All the Belize cayes form Belize Barrier Reef, 320-kilometre long, and the longest in the Western Hemisphere.
